350 CLASS RED STAG & Tahr Hunt

Red Stag. 16-20 point red stags that will average (SCI 350) and will score over (330 SCI). You might see an average of 15-20 deer per day with 5 trophy stags or more on a good day.

Bull Tahr.11-13 inches that will make the SCI record book. You might see an average of 15-20 Tahr per day with 3 trophy bulls or more on a good day. In March and April bulls are group up and not suitable for a life size mount. May is one of the best hunting months as it is before the snows however for the best life size caps June and July is prime time.

Ranches. Are up to 6,000 acres and comprise of both open tussock country with some bush clad valleys. The properties rise from 1,500 ft. to over 6,000 ft. and offer probably the best traditional red stag hunting. You can also find Chamois, Fallow, Tahr, Ram, Goat and Boar all on privately managed ranches in the South Island of New Zealand.

Access. Is by 4x4 vehicle that provides you with good access to most of the ranch during the hunt by way of some safe 4x4 roads up the mountain. However, not all roads can be used after heavy rain or snow.

Accommodation. The lodges are about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Christchurch airport they comprise of Ranch House which caters for up to six guests at any one time. You have access to a washer/dryer and there is phone/fax/internet in the lodge along with some cell service, these are between 5 and 25 minutes away from all our prime hunting areas.

Other Game Animals. You can include other big game animals on this hunt as the ranches have free range Chamois 8-10", Bull Tahr 10-13" and Fallow bucks up to 200 SCI. Then in the game ranch are Elk, NZ Wapiti, larger Red Stags, Fallow, Tahr, Chamois, Goat, Ram and Boar.

Taxidermy work. Guides don't normally turn lips and ears or salt skins. The taxidermist in Christchurch will do this plus salt, dry and pack hides, skulls, antlers and horns, do the documentation and ship to your taxidermist in the U.S.

Taxidermist will also mount all animals and ship to you within twelve months. Expediting fees of approx $600 to $800US for each animal which has about a 4 month turn around.

You will leave the USA on a Saturday but due to travel time and crossing the date line you will arrive in New Zealand early on a Monday morning.

Day 1 - Monday
Breakfast on plane, arrive Auckland early morning after a 12-hour flight from LAX or SFO either transfer to NZ303 a international 737 flight to Christchurch, or, clear Immigration/customs and pick up firearms licence from NZ police in Auckland. Transfer to domestic terminal and fly 1 hour 20 minutes to Christchurch where you will be met and taken to taxidermist to have a hunt briefing, followed by a 2 1/2 hour drive to the lodge and hunting areas. Settle in to the Lodge, have lunch, sight in rifles or bows and have a 1/2 day hunting.

Day 2 thru 4 - Tuesday-Thursday 3 full days hunting

Day 5 - Friday
1/2 day hunting, then return to Christchurch Visit taxidermist, go shopping (if time permits), driven to airport farewell drink (if time permits), fly to Auckland, then on to LAX or SFO, crossing the date line and arriving LAX or SFO midday on that same date, catch connecting flight, and home that evening.
